ASCAC Ghana Conference, Dr. Tony Martin. July 5, 1991

This video recording, dated July 5, 1996, consists of a speech by Africana Studies professor Tony Martin, delivered at the 13th Annual Kemetic Studies Conference in Accra, Ghana. The conference was organized by the Association for the Study of Classical African Civilizations (ASCAC). Dr. Martin’s presentation focuses on the rise of “African consciousness,” exemplified by a surge of interest in books and other publications outlining African history. Martin argues that the resistance to Black Studies departments has risen in proportion to the increase of African consciousness. He also criticizes leaders of the Jewish community, the NAACP, Martin Luther King, Jr., W.E.B. DuBois and others, believing they have been part of efforts to keep people of African descent in a “subordinate position.” Dr. Martin also provides examples of leaders and movements who had a strong sense of their African roots, including Marcus Garvey, Chief Sam, and the Haitian revolutionaries.
