Abstract
This video recording, dated May 6, 1994, consists of a lecture delivered by anthropologist and African Studies scholar, Marimba Ani, in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. The first half of the video captures a pre-lecture dinner. The program begins at time mark 00:54:33. Dr. Asa G. Hilliard, III introduces Ani, and she begins her lecture at time mark 01:12:26. Ani’s presentation focuses on her recently published book, Yurugu: An Afrikan-centered Critique of European Cultural Thought and Behavior. Dr. Ani argues that European culture is predicated on domination and claims of cultural superiority and that African Americans have internalized this conception of reality. She urges people of African descent to nurture a national consciousness to resist the imperialism of European culture.
