Abstract
This video recording consists of the keynote speeches of the 1983 National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) conference. The first speech is by children’s television presenter Fred Rogers, who speaks about his experiences hosting Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood and the parallels to the education of young children. The second address comes from Democratic politician Walter Mondale, who discusses education policy in the United States. The third speaker is Bettye Caldwell, the president of NAEYC, who discusses the activities of the organization. Dr. Asa G. Hilliard, III provides the fourth speech, beginning at time stamp 02:10:59. Dr. Hilliard argues that the “affective and spiritual needs” of both the children and caregivers should be considered in quality child care. He also urges child care providers not to ignore the “broader stress factors” that are present in children’s lives. These issues, such as poverty and unemployment of parents, must be addressed to enable a more holistic and positive approach to quality child care.
