Description / Synopsis
Ikorodo is a traditional music ensemble accompanied by a maiden dance, popular among the Nsukka people of Enugu State, Nigeria. It is performed with a set of four horns (Isi opi, Akpoke, Akpanwunye, Mgbe) employing hocket technique and four percussive instruments (okpokolo – wooden slit drum, osha – rattles, alo – metal gong, igba – membrane drum). The instrumentalists are old men while the dancers are young maidens. This performance was recorded at an Igbo traditional wedding ceremony in Obukpa, Nsukka, on January 5, 2019. In this clip, elders are dancing as the group starts to play.

Description / Synopsis
This series contains materials collected from the University of Nigeria Nsukka for the ADEPt project. The University of Nigeria was founded in 1960 with the Faculty of Arts, including the first Department of Music in Nigeria. The Department of Music boasts a number of student ensembles, including the African Instrumental Ensemble, Opera, Chorus, Dance-Drama, and Afro Pop Band. The Nsukka community is known for its indigenous music including the unique Ikorodo ensemble which is accompanied by the maidens dance. A partnership with the Africana Digital Ethnography Project (ADEPt), the University of Nigeria Digital Collection includes studio recordings from the Sam Chukwu Memorial Recording Studio (founded 2019) and field recordings by scholars of the University of Nigeria. Consistent with best practices, all raw data and edited audio and video clips are stored at the University of Nigeria. If the University of Nigeria establishes an institutional repository in the future, the recordings available here will also be uploaded to that site. For access to unedited field recordings for research purposes, please contact the Curator, Jude Nwankwo, University of Nigeria - Nsukka, jude.nwankwo@unn.edu.ng
