In 2003, the Atlanta City Council added Mayor Jackson's name to the Atlanta airport in recognition of his role in its expansion. When complete, the new international terminal will also be named in his honor as the Maynard Holbrook Jackson, Jr. International Terminal.

Mayor Jackson and his protege Shirley Franklin in 1993. Franklin served as commissioner of cultural affairs and as chief administrative officer and city manager under Mayor Andrew Young. When Jackson returned for his third term, Franklin remained as executive officer of operations. Mayor Jackson threw his strong support behind Franklin in her winning campaign to become the first female mayor of Atlanta, serving from 2002 to 2010.
