President Hugh Gloster with Dr. Benjamin Mays holding award. On award: The President's Award presented to Dr. Benjamin E. Mays. The birthplace of Benjamin E. Mays in a rural area of South Carolina as the son of a sharecropper gave little promise that he would become an educator and humanitarian known throughout the United States and around the world. Moving North for the quality college education which his thirst for knowledge and excellence demanded, he quickly proved his [?], and moved on to earn a PhD at the University of Chicago, serving in a series of influencial positions in several major cities. He came to Atlanta in 1940 as President of Morehouse College, and during the next 27 years shaped the destiny of that institution, and the lives of countless hundreds who came under his influence.
