Corporate Social Responsibility During Times of National Crisis: An Examination of Donations Made by Corporations and Foundations to Private HBCUs, 2020-2022

This study aimed to investigate corporate and foundation giving to private HBCUs during the Black Lives Matter social movement, focusing on the 2020-2022 period. The study utilized a qualitative methodology that employed semi-structured interviews with four private HBCU Institutional Advancement Officers and four Corporate Social Responsibility Officers at Corporations and Foundations. Specifically, this study examined why foundations and corporations give to HBCUs, what metrics they consider to decide on the programs they will fund, and how they measure the success of their investments in private HBCUs. Additionally, the study explored innovations used in donor solicitation and cultivation at HBCUs. The results reaffirm both Archie Carroll's Pyramid of Corporate Social Responsibility and the Resource Dependency Theory and present implications for both donors and Institutional Advancement offices at HBCUs.
