An altercation took place between Hawkins and some sign bearers moments before. The demonstrators accused Hawkins of being an integrationist and a tool of Mayor Albert Boutwell.

School authorities quickly had it replaced with the American flag. Three schools integrated this week under federal orders. Students from both segregated and integrated schools have demonstrated at several schools in the city in an attempt to get others to join their boycott of classes.
